Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with the principles of dissecting and reverse engineering complex malware. Students will inspect malware via disassembly and decompilation tools and other static analysis methods to identify capabilities, intent, and indicators of compromise (IoCs). Using both malware author and defender perspectives, students will learn to overcome advanced techniques used to circumvent reverse engineering.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify useful indicators of compromise in a malware sample by applying knowledge of cyberattacks and malware detection.
  • Deconstruct machine code and inspect assembly language.
  • Analyze advanced Windows malware samples, including those with packing, code injection, and anti-reversing techniques.
  • Analyze malicious code in non-standard formats, including documents and mobile platforms.
  • Perform an investigation using advanced forensic malware techniques and create scripts to further the analysis.
