Description

Objective:

To provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the principles of computers and data processing.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Compare the hardware and software components and the input and output devices of manual, personal computer, and data processing systems and describe the differences among microcomputers, minicomputers, and small, medium, and large computer systems
  • Define input, processing, and output, and explain the relationship between data and information
  • Name the technologies used for storage and compare their advantages and disadvantages
  • Differentiate between temporary and permanent storage, batch and on-line processing, and internal and external storage
  • Describe how software functions and differentiate application from system software
  • Describe common batch data entry devices, types of printers, terminal devices, other input and output devices and their applications, and the tasks performed by special purpose microcomputers
