Objective:

To provide students with an understanding about the structure of financial institutions and their role in the financial and economic fields.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the characteristics and functions of money
  • Describe the various agencies that charter, regulate, and insure the different financial institutions
  • Describe the structure and functions of the Federal Reserve System
  • Name and describe the Federal Reserve's five major tools for regulating the money supply and affecting the economy
  • Explain the various definitions of the money supply
  • Identify and distinguish the characteristics and functions of commercial banks and nonbank financial institutions, especially credit unions
  • Explain the creation of money and the impact of the reserve requirement on that
  • List and explain the provisions of major financial legislation, especially their effects on credit unions
