Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce the fundamentals of writing and presentation in the context of the Department of Defense. Mastering these fundamentals allows students to communicate more effectively to a variety of audiences, using a range of methods.

Learning Outcomes:

  • write grammatically and with correct usage in accordance with The Elements of Style and The Chicago Manual of Style
  • revise writing by using revision techniques and completing the revision process as outlined in the required lesson presentations and The Tongue and Quill, Chapter 8
  • evaluate appropriate research and analysis into a formal academic research paper, following the guidelines of The Chicago Manual of Style
  • write an effective recommendation as outlined in the description for the assignment using the guidelines under Required Readings
  • compose a peer review of another student's writing in accordance with "Conducting Peer Reviews" and other required readings and lesson presentations
  • create an annotated bibliography for the Final Research Paper using The Chicago Manual of Style
  • evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of a written statement from an investigative interview
  • write an incident report based on the results of an investigation, using the fundamentals of effective writing
  • write an academic research paper/report on a complex, security-related topic using Chicago style.
  • write strong sentences in accordance with The Elements of Style and other guidelines for government writing as listed under Required Readings
