Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with effective techniques for communicating ideas, concepts, and policies in defense security. The course examines dimensions of communication styles, concepts, principles, and theories of communication and how these apply to effective communication in Department of Defense (DoD) security. It addresses communication in problem-solving processes, the importance of communication to effective leadership, and the importance of effective communication in complex wartime and peacetime environments. The course also provides an overview of how the DoD bureaucracy supports communication.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze communication protocol by distinguishing DoD communication types, comparing/contrasting the U.S. verbal and non-verbal communication elements with foreign cultures, and examining how to use cultural differences to tailor communication
  • Analyze DoD communications by examining the elements and criteria of effective use of plain language to develop security policy
  • Evaluate persuasive strategies and techniques by appraising the audience, selecting appropriate persuasive devices, defending the importance of the thesis, and assessing the strength of the argument
  • Evaluate communication strategies to overcome objections and deal with difficult people
