Description

Objective:

The Cambridge International AS & A Level Literature in English examination provides learners with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of international poetry, prose and drama, with candidates studying all genres at both levels.
The AS Level Literature in English exam consists of two components. For Paper 1, students must answer one question from a choice of Drama texts and one question of Poetry texts. Each requires an essay length response over 2 hours. For Paper 2, students must answer one question from a choice of Prose texts and one question from a choice of two previously unseen texts over 2 hours. Each requires an essay length response. For both Papers, students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the set text they have studied and an appreciation of relevant contexts; analysis of the ways in which writers’ choices shape meaning and create effects; an informed, independent opinion about the text studied, and an appropriate communication of literary ideas and arguments.
The A Level Literature in English exam requires an additional two components. For Paper 3, students must answer a question from a choice of Shakespeare plays and a question from a choice of Drama set texts. Each requires an essay length response over 2 hours. For Paper 4, students must answer two questions: one from a choice of Pre-1900 poetry and prose texts and one from a choice of Post-1900 poetry and prose texts. In addition to the knowledge and skills required at the AS Level, students at the A Level must also discuss and evaluate varying opinions and interpretations of literary texts. Marks from Papers 1 and 2 from the AS Level are carried forward and combined with Papers 3 and 4 to comprise the complete assessment at the A Level.

Skills Measured:

The exam covers five assessment objectives, requiring students to 1) Respond with understanding to literary texts in a variety of forms, from different cultures; with an appreciation of relevant contexts that illuminate readings of the texts; 2) Analyze ways in which writers’ choices of language, form and structure shape meanings and effects; 3) Produce informed independent opinions and interpretations of literary texts; 4) Communicate a relevant, structured and supported response appropriate to literary study and 5) Discuss and evaluate varying opinions and interpretations of literary texts.
