Description

Objective:

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to gain the skills necessary to effectively value property and settle claims. Students will gain an understanding of the property claims environment and how to address the financial impact of loss.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will learn how to apply the steps to investigate and document a property insurance claim, including the unique considerations associated with catastrophe claims and working with public adjusters.
  • Students will become familiar with coverages provided by the HO-3 policy, property covered by the BPP, strategies for recommending commercial property endorsements, and gain an understanding of business income risks, commercial crime insurance, and inland marine insurance.
  • Students will learn how to handle specific kinds of property claims, such as fire (suspicious and accidental), lightning, windstorm, hail, water damage, mold, and theft.
  • Students will examine how to determine coverage for business income and extra expense claims and how to handle homeowners loss of use claims.
  • Students will explore the unique challenges of handling transit insurance claims, how to handle a motor truck cargo liability insurance claim, as well as contractors equipment insurance claims, and builders risk insurance claims.
  • Students will learn how to distinguish between replacement cost and actual cash value, will become familiar with alternatives to the replacement cost and actual cash value valuation methods, and will learn to apply coinsurance, property insurance limits and deductibles, and book value to property damage claims.
  • Students will examine various aspects of the claim settlements process, such as the proportional and primary/excess methods of calculating the amount payable, using the appraisal provision, pursuing subrogation and reinsurance recoveries, and denying coverage.
