Objective:

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate and process simple and complex workers' compensation claims.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will gain an understanding of how to determine whether an injury qualifies for workers compensation benefits, of the “arising out of” requirement, of the “in the course of” requirement, and how the time and place of injury affect workers compensation.
  • Students will be able to explain how WC&EL policies help employers comply with state workers compensation statutes, how and why employers liability insurance is necessary, and how WC&EL policies can be endorsed.
  • Students will be introduced to a framework for workers compensation coverage analysis, the process for investigating a claim for coverage and compensability, and the guidelines and techniques for investigating post-accident activity.
  • Students will learn how to create a bodily injury investigation plan, how to evaluate the medical treatment associated with a claim, how to determine the physical impairment and the extent to which it creates an inability to work, how to evaluate psychological injury claims, and what is involved in the occupation-related rehabilitation process.
  • Students will learn how to calculate temporary disability benefits, determine benefits for scheduled injuries, determine benefits for nonscheduled permanent partial disability and permanent disability, and also how to manage an employee’s return to work.
  • The student will learn how to determine whether subrogation applies to a workers compensation loss and how that process is undertaken, how to resolve a workers compensation lien, and how state secondary funds operate.
  • Students will gain an understanding of how workers compensation reserves are established, the issues associated with paying WC claims, how to calculate WC death benefits, and how to terminate WC benefits or settle workers compensation claims.
