Washington International Education Group Meeting
4/4/2018 3:00 PM

The April 4, 2018 ACE Washington International Education Group (WIEG) meeting discussed the status of DACA and the DREAM Act and examined creative approaches for ensuring DACA students receive access to resources needed to complete their degree programs.

Given the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent punt of a key Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) case from a district court in California back down to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in California, most aspects of DACA will remain in place until further notice, giving nearly 700,000 enrollees a temporary reprieve from deportation. Under the California ruling—and another district court ruling in New York—undocumented immigrants currently with DACA status can file to renew their two-year terms in the program. However, these young people, many of whom are students on our campuses, still are living in limbo.

In absence of a long-term solution, how can higher education institutions assist students with DACA status during this prolonged period of uncertainty?
