University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (IL): Illinois International High School Initiative
Began: 2002
Funding: State of Illinois. Individual school projects include 25 percent in-kind contributions and local business and community support.
The Illinois International High School Initiative (IHS) was established as a statewide program with a focus on the international dimension of teaching, learning, and community engagement in secondary schools. Currently the program network includes 19 pilot schools/high school districts and four regional IHS associations, representing more than 5,000 teachers and 250,000 students in the state of Illinois. Any high school in Illinois can become an international high school by offering an integrated course of study and experiences with international content aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards (ILS). A set of Core Program Elements and IHS designation criteria were developed to serve as benchmark standards in developing institutional strategies of international education consistent with the school's mission and the community's goals and needs. The initiative has developed as an inclusive platform for international education cooperation and collaboration within the state, nationally, and internationally. IHS also hosts an annual Global Studies Forum, a statewide platform for the exchange of best practices in international education in the secondary schools of Illinois. In a partnership with community colleges, universities, and professional associations, the IHS initiative offers professional development programs and activities for teachers. The Illinois International High School is an initiative of the State of Illinois and is a cooperative effort of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois State Board of Education, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Illinois Consortium for International Education. The Office of International Programs and Studies at UIUC administers the program.
