Where can I find help for learning the job?

There is help available for mastering the position of department chair or head. The materials in this section offer assistance in locating a variety of resources, ranging from national programs to discipline associations to regional consortia to institution-specific programs. This section also provides materials and resources for women assuming leadership positions.
 

Campus-based Examples of Chair Leadership Development Programs

Iowa State University
Iowa State University's year-long Academic Leadership Forum united deans and chairs in developing a leadership model for the campus. The University of Nebraska at Kearney has developed a self-guided interview schedule for new chairs with suggestions from the institution's key offices/officers with whom they need to be acquainted in order to do their job effectively. For each office or person, the guide provides suggested questions that a new chair might ask. Academy for Leadership and Development

Supported by Mesa Community College, one of the 10 Maricopa Colleges, the Academy for Leadership provides numerous yearlong leadership training programs in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. ACE Department Chair Workshops

ACE has been a pioneer at the national level in offering leadership training for department chairs. The national department chair leadership program currently offers three annual workshops, in November (Texas), February (California), and June (Washington, D.C.). By special arrangement, ACE will schedule additional workshops for organized groups of colleges, such as state systems or private consortia.
