"We applaud the plan announced today by the Council of Regional
Accrediting Commissions (C-RAC), which is designed to ensure that
colleges and universities are doing all they can to enable their
students to graduate with a quality degree. Under this new policy,
regional accreditors will use a set of common criteria to identify
institutions that may be struggling and subject them to additional
scrutiny, while also considering individual institutional missions and
student populations.
Accreditors ensure academic quality, which is vital to maintaining
public confidence in colleges and universities. The most important
aspect of accreditation, peer review, distinguishes quality control in
American higher education from the rest of the world. Today’s
announcement recognizes the great diversity of higher education
institutions in this country and their individual missions, and takes
into account the varying needs of the students they serve. We look
forward to working with accreditors on this important initiative."
