Higher Education Associations Release Statement on Federal Government Shutdown

October 11, 2013

ACE and five other higher education associations released a statement Thursday expressing concern over the federal government shutdown.

According to the statement: “The shutdown of federal agencies and the potential for default if the government’s borrowing limit is not raised are significantly impacting the nation’s economy and the lives of many of our fellow citizens. This stalemate threatens to exacerbate the cynicism Americans already feel about the function and importance of their government.”

The associations also call on colleges and universities to engage in a vigorous debate about the problem and to work on renewing students' commitment to understanding and participating in a better way to govern.
