ACE President Molly Corbett Broad on City College of San Francisco Accreditation Action

July 03, 2013

“The City College of San Francisco is a historic institution which since 1935 has served the postsecondary needs of hundreds of thousands of Californians. The action by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges is regrettable—and absolutely necessary.

An institution that does not meet accreditation standards cheats its students and its community. It is apparent that dramatic change is needed at the City College of San Francisco so the institution can better serve its 85,000 students. Nonetheless, this is a sad day for San Francisco and for the many students who rely on the higher education opportunities afforded them by the College.

I hope that the city of San Francisco and the California Community Colleges system will quickly take strong action to put this venerable institution back on solid financial and academic footing. We stand ready to help in any way that we can as the accrediting commission, California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris and the city of San Francisco work to achieve that goal.”
