Council of Fellows Weekend

Articulating the Value Proposition

May 31, 2013

Summary

Meeting Overview

The annual Council of Fellows Weekend is a retreat for current and former ACE Fellows to network while gaining valuable professional development about current topics relevant to higher education leadership.

The 2013 Council of Fellows Weekend was held in Michigan, home to the highest percentage of former ACE Fellows holding leadership positions in the United States.

In addition, many of the presentations and pre-events explored the provocative question of what higher education may be able to learn from the city of Detroit. To understand the region's roots in manufacturing and the automotive industry, the 2013 COF Weekend began with a tour of the renowned Ford River Rouge Plant historic facility, a leader in sustainable and green manufacturing.

Former Detroit Mayor, Dennis Archer was the keynote speaker. Mayor Archer was recently honored for his work in diversity and he will share reflections with us. This was followed by a panel discussion, "Lessons Learned from Detroit" in which executive leaders from local industry, higher education, and foundations shared experiences in best practices on navigating challenging economic times and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

Other opportunities included a pre-conference workshop, "Career Choices: Options Along the Way," held following the River Rouge tour, and Saturday evening featured a chance for ACE Fellows to mingle for a good cause during a banquet and silent auction benefitting the COF Annual Fund.

The 2013 COF Weekend concluded with sessions on "Advice to Incoming 2013-14 ACE Fellows"; "Working with Boards During Change" featuring CEO panelists from higher education, K-12, and government who have been successful in working with their governing boards to achieve positive impact; and the always informative "Washington Update" from Anne Hickey, ACE's Director, Government Relations.
