COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECEIVES $300,000 IN GRANT FUNDING TO SUPPORT
EDUCATIONAL AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Luzerne County Community College to offer additional GED® preparatory courses and workforce development for region's adult learners

Nanticoke, Pa. (June 24, 2008)—GED Testing Service™ (GEDTS) today announced that the Workforce and Community Development Division at Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) in Pennsylvania received over $300,000 in grant funding in May for programs focused on educational training and workforce development. A majority was awarded by the WIRED Wall Street West program and the Middle States Regional Council of the College Board, marking the first time the Workforce and Community Development Division at LCCC received grant funding for GED programs from these organizations.

To support GED completers in pursuing an associate's degree for success in the financial services industry, Luzerne County Community College received $165,000 for the initiative, "Project Success: GED Completers Transitioning to Postsecondary Education to Prepare for Employment in High Growth Industries." LCCC also received $9,000 to fund, in part, a special preparatory program for the Spanish GED Tests at the college's Multicultural Learning Center in Hazelton.

Peter Balsamo, vice president for Workforce and Community Development, and Ivette Trent, bilingual program director, ALTA Program, are the respective project directors for each initiative.
