Feature Stories

Economic Impact of GED Testing
GED graduates don’t just change their own lives; they play a new role in their communities as well. It’s important to include the economic benefits and returns of GED testing when discussing the program with colleagues, policymakers, educators and other opinion leaders. GED Testing Service has recently been using information provided in reports from The Alliance for Excellent Education and The Community Service Society. We wanted to share them with you so you also have this information on hand when you need it.

The Alliance for Excellent Education and the Campaign for High School Equity are tweeting the economic impact of graduating the high school dropouts in each state. You can view the results online for the 50 largest cities or follow the conversation on Twitter using @All4Ed or @HSequity.

Do you know about other reports like this? Send them our way! We are always collecting research reports on this and other GED testing topics and appreciate your help in keeping things up to date. Email GEDTSCommunications@ace.nche.edu with the link or attachment included. Thanks!

Usability Study Overview Published
As part of the computer-based testing pilot, GED Testing Service commissioned a usability study to learn more about GED test-takers and the GED Test. Working with Pearson VUE, a global leader in computer-based testing, the usability study was intended to evaluate and establish ease-of-use standards for a computer-based GED Test.

To learn more about "ease-of-use" and the preliminary results of the study, read the full Usability Study report and the Usability Study Overview available on GED AccessPoint (Request a copy from your GED Administrator). This document, produced jointly by GED Testing Service and Pearson VUE, describes what was learned from the study and the next steps forward for the computer-based GED Test.

Examiner's Corner

Just in Case!
Each GED testing center must have an emergency plan accessible to all GED Examiners at the test center and all addendum sites. A copy of the emergency plan must also be sent to the jurisdiction’s GED Administrator. An emergency plan must include written safety procedures and identify responsible personnel for managing any contingency.  For more information regarding creating emergency plans refer to the GED Polices and Procedures Manual (2008) section 3.11.

About the GED Test

Comparability Study
As we mentioned in last month's newsletter, GED Testing Service has started its comparability study with 11 states. The comparability study is being used to ensure that the computer-based tests and paper-and-pencil tests are comparable measures of a test-taker's knowledge.

As of June 3rd, 1,081 tests had been delivered reaching 12 percent of our goal. An additional 937 tests have been scheduled through the end of June. To learn more about the computer-based testing pilot at GED Testing Service, visit our web page dedicated to the project at www.GEDtest.org/CBTPilot.

Marketing the GED Testing Program

Ad Council and Dollar General Campaign on the Horizon
GED Testing Service recently became involved in a national campaign to generate awareness about GED testing and the support available for adults to take the first step. GED Administrators in every jurisdiction were invited to a presentation with the Ad Council to learn more about the program in its current state. More details will be provided to the entire GED testing community, including those on this newsletter list, as the campaign is finalized.

Know someone who will want to get the news about this campaign first-hand? Encourage them to sign up for The Community online at: www.GEDtest.org/thecommunity.

Share GED Information Through Video
GED Testing Service put together a series of informational videos for test-takers to learn about the GED testing program. Access these videos on our web site or YouTube Channel and share them with adults as they come in for information about the test. Or, you can give out the web site for test-takers to go home and look it up themselves.

Web sites: www.GEDtest.org/YouTube or www.GEDtest.org/FAQ.

The top videos are featured on the GED Testing Service home page and include: 1) What is the GED Test? 2) What do I need to pass the GED Test? and 3) How can I study for the test?

These are just a few of the videos created to explain the most frequently asked questions about GED testing. GED Testing Service will be recording these videos in Spanish and posting them on the YouTube Channel over the summer. For more information or questions, please email GEDTSCommunications@ace.nche.edu.
