Office of Institutional Initiatives

Goals and Activities
OII seeks to provide essential support services to member institutions, as well as non-member institutions, in alignment with the mission and goals of ACE.
We currently offer support in the following areas:
 •  Faculty Career Flexibility
 •  Facilitation
 •  Training
 •  Leadership Development

Staff Members
 •  Claire Van Ummersen
Senior Advisor and Project Director
202-939-9389
 •  Jean McLaughlin
Senior Program Specialist
202-375-7531
In addition to OII staff members, a consultant corps of recently retired presidents and other experts form the nucleus of individuals available to assist with system and institutional needs.

The Office of Institutional Initiatives (OII) provides high-quality integrated services to assist higher education systems, as well as individual colleges and universities, with building capacity and advancing their mission. These custom-designed, solution-oriented services include retreat and meeting facilitation, leadership education for mid- and more advanced senior leaders, and support in areas of special concern to systems or campuses. Drawing on ACE's considerable expertise, the office offers assistance with institutional initiatives from strategic planning, change management and faculty career flexibility to preparation for regional accreditation or NCAA certification.

Our work with Faculty Career Flexibility

OII offers services to institutions through funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to increase the flexibility of faculty careers. These activities include assistance with policy development and assessment, climate surveys, leadership development, and institutional transformation. To date, we have received $10 million dollars in funding from the Sloan Foundation to support these efforts. Additionally, we have submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation to develop and pilot an expanded "customizable consulting" service.
