Bringing the World into the Classroom: National Award Winners
Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon University was recognized for their International
Collaborative Construction Management course. This course is
designed to expose students from the US, Turkey, Brazil, and Israel to
an international collaboration experience, which will provide them with
skills for working with local engineers and managers on international
projects. This virtual international joint venture is supported by
common commercially available technologies, to simulate a real world
environment, and collaboration is further facilitated through
video-conferencing systems.
The Center for Collaborative Online International Learning at The
SUNY Global Center
The Center for Collaborative Online International Learning at The
SUNY Global Center was recognized for Collaborative Online
International Learning (COIL). The COIL Center's mission is to
develop and implement online collaborative international courses as a
format for experiential cross-cultural learning. COIL has worked with 17
SUNY campuses helping them to create globally networked courses with
partner schools in at least 10 countries.
University of Colorado at Boulder
The University of Colorado at Boulder was recognized for One
International Baccalaureate Degree: Three Universities, an
initiative aimed at establishing an International Bachelor's degree in a
science-oriented track that is awarded in partnership with the
University of Wollongong in Australia, and Dublin City University in
Ireland. Students in this degree program participate in video conference
classes, let jointly by a faculty member at each university, which is
then complemented by personal communication among classmates using
Skype.
Wagner College
Wagner College, in coordination with The Hellenic American University
in Athens, Greece, was recognized for Introducing International
Learning Communities in an Online Environment. This initiative
provides an opportunity for students and faculty from these two
institutions to interact in a semester long learning community. Through
teleconferencing, Smart-Board, Moodle (course management system), and
Skype, students worked in dyads and teams to meet the objectives of the
International Business Communication course.
