The Internationalization Collaborative

As a learning community of 109 institutions, the Collaborative provides a forum for faculty and administrators to share ideas and help each other in furthering their international agendas. Members share information about institutional strategies and outcomes and key issues that need further research and advocacy. The activities of the Collaborative focus on the challenges to implementing comprehensive internationalization strategies at member institutions. The activities of the Collaborative are guided by the Advisory Council, an 18-member group that serves as a liason to other Collaborative members and provides direction for Collaborative activities. For information about joining the Collaborative, please contact Jill Wisniewski at jill_wisniewski@ace.nche.edu.

Web Resources

  • ACE's Internationalization Toolkit provides resources to assist leaders in the mapping, planning, implementing, and evaluating campus internationalization. Tools include faculty and staff surveys, sample strategic internationalization plans, instruments for tacking international partnerships, and a variety of other resources. A section highlighting "good practice" profiles institutions doing innovative work in internationalization.
  • ACE's Guide to Assessing International Learning provides practical advice on preparing for assessment, detailed information on an assessment approach piloted by a FIPSE-funded project, and other resources resources on assessment.
  • Resources on faculty engagement in comprehensive internationalization: The 2008 Collaborative Annual Meeting focused on faculty engagement, and the 2002 Collaborative Annual Meeting also highlighted best practices in this area.
  • Internationalization Collaborative member profiles showcase institutional vision and goals for internationalization, and successful strategies for achieving these goals.

Annual Meeting

ACE sponsors an annual meeting of the Internationalization Collaborative in Washington, DC, bringing together the leadership teams from each of the member institutions. Agenda items for past meetings have included comprehensive internationalization, faculty engagement, international learning outcomes, assessing internationalization, and strategies for moving ahead. The Annual Meeting is open to Collaborative members only.

Regional Meetings

Institutional members of the Collaborative host regional meetings on internationalization. These meetings are open to all institutions seeking to enhance their internationalization efforts. Past topics have been new directions in international education, leveraging resources in international education, and cultures and languages across the curriculum. Access past regional meetings here.

Upcoming regional meetings include:

October 15–16, 2009
Internationalization Collaborative regional meeting
Hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH
Intercultural Competency Across the Curriculum: Infusing Culture and Language Campus Wide

November 6-7, 2009
Internationalization Collaborative regional meeting
Hosted by Kalamazoo College and Beloit College in Beloit, WI
Integrating Study Abroad into the Undergraduate Curriculum

Collaborative Mini-Grant Awards

The purpose of the mini-grants is to encourage member institutions to develop activities to learn from each other and to accelerate the impact of internationalization at their institutions. The institutions may focus on the same topic (e.g., assessing students' international learning), or they may have different learning goals (e.g., College A is interested in how College B uses technology to enhance learning, while College B may want to learn how College A established joint-degree programs with an international partner). ACE especially encourages cross-sector partnerships, such as ones between community colleges and four-year institutions, that address students' international learning throughout the educational and transfer process. New or existing partnerships/consortia may apply.

  • Mini-Grant Awards for 2005 supported collaborative projects focused on service learning programs.
  • Mini-Grant Awards for 2006 supported the Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum consortium and efforts to integrate study abroad into the curriculum and co-curriculum.
