2008 Leadership Network for International Education

New Routes to Campus Internationalization

ACE is pleased to announce that the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Leadership Network for International Education will take place in Washington, DC, on November 20 from 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. The meeting will focus on how institutional leaders develop new ways to engage a broad coalition of campus constituents in a multi-faceted approach to internationalization.

This is a meeting for Presidents and Provosts of ACE member institutions only. Other institutional leaders are welcome to attend the meeting, provided they are accompanied by their President or Provost.

Recent ACE research reveals that there are major gaps and slow progress towards campus internationalization. All too frequently internationalization efforts at U.S. institutions of higher education have been focused on a few disparate sets of activities—like foreign language education, education abroad, recruitment of international students, area and international studies, or faculty research collaborations. If students or faculty are not directly involved in one of these activities, they may find institutional internationalization efforts irrelevant. With the increasing reference to student global competency in institutional vision and mission statements, institutional leaders are now working to broaden stakeholder's understanding and commitment to internationalization. The 2008 meeting will feature panels on:

  • How to align internationalization with ongoing campus initiatives such as accreditation, assessment, general education reform, and community engagement;
  • How to leverage international partnerships to enhance campus internationalization;
  • Lessons learned from former presidents who have successfully led internationalization efforts.

The deadline to register for the meeting is November 10, 2008.
