Leadership Network for International Education

A Strategic View of Education Abroad

In 2006, the Leadership Network annual meeting (see the full 2006 meeting agenda [Word Document]) explored the role institutional leaders play in enhancing education abroad opportunities and addressed issues of quality assurance, safety and risk, and expanding access to new populations. Highlights from the meeting included:

  • A speech from Karen R. Hughes, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, U.S. Department of State, on efforts by the U.S. Department of State to promote the United States as a higher education destination, expand capacity, improve the global competency of students, and increase the diversity of exchange participants.
  • A presentation (PPT File) from Geoffrey Bannister, President, Bannister and Associates Consulting and Management Services for the Fields of International and Cross-Border Education (and formerly President of the Forum on Education Abroad and Butler University), on using education abroad strategically and on the responsibilities of a University of Record (Word Document).
  • A presentation from Mary M. Dwyer, President, Institute for the International Education of Students, on actions institutions can undertake to enhance the quality of education abroad. (See the full presentation [Word Document] and summary [Word Document].)
  • A checklist (Word Document) produced by William P. Hoye, Associate Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, University of Notre Dame, on health, safety, security, and risk issues affecting education abroad for presidents and provosts to consider. (As a follow-up to this discussion, the Institute for the International Education of Students has kindly agreed to share its Avian Influenza Contingency Plan/Pandemic Protocol [PDF File].)
