Overview of Issues in U.S. Higher Education

This international visitors brief provides an overview of how U.S. higher education is organized, with specific attention to issues of governance, administration, accreditation, faculty, and instruction. The challenges facing U.S. higher education also are covered.

Terry W. Hartle, Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs, American Council on Education

Making Institutional Partnerships Part of Your Internationalization Strategy

This roundtable discussion brings together international participants with U.S. presidents and chief academic officers to discuss best practices in bilateral and multilateral cooperation and how these cooperative activities can enhance campus internationalization.

Working in the Public Interest: Reform and Change in Asian Higher Education

Higher education systems in Asia are undergoing rapid changes. China, India, and Indonesia are seeking to expand capacity dramatically and, at the same time, increase their quality and relevance.  This session features speakers from China, India and Indonesia, sharing how their education systems are being reformed to both work in the public interest and pursue national priorities.

Moderator: Nancy E. Cantor, Chancellor and President, Syracuse University, and Chair-Elect, American Council on Education Board of Directors

Deepak Nayyar, Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and former Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, India

Puruhito, Rector, Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia (presentation, ppt)

Binglin Zhong, President, Beijing Normal University, China (presentation, ppt)

Changing Global Patterns of Student Mobility

This special policy forum features speakers from the United States, Asia, Australia, and Europe. IDP Education Australia predicts that nearly 8 million students will be educated in countries other than their own by 2025. This session explores the implications and complexities of increased global student mobility through the lens of both receiving and sending countries. It examines the changing international student flows on two levels: 1) on the global level, by examining processes that encourage a transnational education market, and 2) on the national level, by looking at efforts to attract foreign students as well as policies to encourage students to study in their home countries.

Moderator: Peggy Blumenthal, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice President of Educational Services, Institute of International Education

Christian Bode, Secretary General, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (presentation, ppt)

Fiona Buffinton, Chief Executive Officer, Australia Education International (presentation, ppt)
