Young Americans Losing Ground in Postsecondary
Educational Attainment
The tradition of young people attaining a higher level
of education than the generation before them seems to have stalled. For
far too many people of color, young adults attain a postsecondary degree
at lower rates than their elders. This is one of the key findings from
the recent ACE report Minorities in Higher Education 2008:
Twenty-Third Status Report.
According to the report, generational gains of the past are no longer
evident, and existing racial/ethnic and gender gaps have not diminished
over the past 20 years. The implications of this trend are clear: Unless
we close the gaps, the problem will only be exacerbated, because the
U.S. population is increasingly made up of racial minorities who
historically have low levels of educational achievement. . . .
