By the Numbers: Students and Private Loans

In 2003–04, more than half (56 percent) of undergraduate students with private loans borrowed the maximum amount allowable through the federal Stafford loan program and another 21 percent borrowed less than the annual maximum. However, more than 20 percent of students who were likely eligible for a Stafford loan did not take advantage of this option at all, according to a new ACE analysis. . . .
