Solid Resources in Unsteady Times

In the winter 2009 Legal Watch column, I highlighted some of the challenges that institutions of higher learning could expect to face in the coming year. Increased regulation, reduced budgets and endowments, and the overall need to "accomplish more with less" were all areas of concern. In the first quarter of 2009, campuses across the country have been forced to make difficult choices, including layoffs, furloughs, and pay freezes, in an effort to cope with constricting budgets. In addition to being emotionally charged, these decisions involve important legal issues and risks. Attorneys should be informed and involved before these decisions are made in order to flag potential areas of concern. . . .
