Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch was famous for stopping citizens on the streets of Manhattan and asking, "How am I doing?" Doing so helped earn Koch a reputation for being down to earth, accessible, and genuinely interested in doing right by his city.

Can today's college and university presidents take a lesson from Koch? Is there value in walking the halls and quads of academe and asking staff, faculty, and students to assess their performance on the job? Career advisers generally say yes, but temper that advice with some words of caution. . . .
