On an ordinary spring day in 2005 during my 10th year as
president of Agnes Scott College, I suddenly noticed signs with my
picture all over campus and the words "MBB DAY: Celebrating the First 10
Years!" At lunch, student performance groups sang and danced and made
speeches in a balloon-filled Evans Dining Hall. That afternoon, a
faculty reception included a wonderful video depiction of the previous
10 years, a series of warm and funny resolutions, and a big silver bowl.
A few days later, the board of trustees hosted an Atlanta-wide reception
highlighting the completion of our comprehensive campaign and building
program. During these festivities I realized, "It doesn’t get any
better than this. It’s time to leave. . . ."
