Presidential Transitions: Planning the Last Year

On an ordinary spring day in 2005 during my 10th year as president of Agnes Scott College, I suddenly noticed signs with my picture all over campus and the words "MBB DAY: Celebrating the First 10 Years!" At lunch, student performance groups sang and danced and made speeches in a balloon-filled Evans Dining Hall. That afternoon, a faculty reception included a wonderful video depiction of the previous 10 years, a series of warm and funny resolutions, and a big silver bowl. A few days later, the board of trustees hosted an Atlanta-wide reception highlighting the completion of our comprehensive campaign and building program. During these festivities I realized, "It doesn’t get any better than this. It’s time to leave. . . ."
