An Appreciation of Lillian Levine

I celebrate Lillian Levine, my mother and mentor. Lillian from Eastern-European immigrant stock exemplifies the best of the old world and new, her life already spanning 90 years. Lillian, like her mother before her, my grandmother Rachel, came to this country to live the good life. Ask her and she will tell you that family is her life, her happiness and well-being defined entirely by the happiness and well-being of her children and grandchildren. A brilliant mind, a gentle soul and a resilient spirit, Lillian taught me the value and beauty of language, of writing, reading and telling stories for the joy of others. She models compassion and patience. "Good work brings good things" is her personal mantra. Lillian and I have made a promise to one another. I keep her company, she teaches me the art of growing old with dignity and grace. I celebrate her, wishing still that I can be more like her.
