An Example of Leadership for Us All

Image

Known for her warmth, enthusiasm and dynamic personality, Dr. Patricia Cormier was inaugurated as the 24th president of Longwood College on April 11, 1997. Since that time, Longwood College has become Longwood University; and President Cormier's touch has been felt on numerous levels, in a variety of settings, and on both internal and external fronts. One of her deans, Dr. Deneese Jones, remarked: "Imagine a leader who understands symbolism, gets the 'big picture,' and whose presence commands respect from everyone she encounters. If you can imagine this type of person, you have now encountered President Patty Cormier. At just under 5 feet in height, she is nonetheless a powerhouse and a dynamic individual. I have watched her work with the university Board of Visitors, politicians, community leaders, philanthropic donors, her cabinet team members, the academic faculty, staff and students."

In times of crisis, Dr. Cormier has led Longwood with strength and vision. Following the Great Fire of 2001 that severely damaged Longwood's signature building, Ruffner Hall, Dr. Cormier promised everyone, "Ruffner Hall will be rebuilt and it will be rebuilt in the way in which it was designed." During this crisis, those from near and far sensed her heart-felt compassion for the faculty and students who lost personal items in their offices and dorms due to the fire. But, more importantly, she was known by her spirit of leadership that propelled the institution forward during a difficult time. True to her nature, Dr. Cormier would see opportunity when faced with tragedy. True to her promise, Ruffner Hall was rededicated on April 23, 2005 with greatly expanded amenities and a new high-tech infrastructure.

Beyond the halls of Longwood University, President Patty Cormier has inspired hundreds of women who take part in Virginia Network programs over the years. She serves on presidential panels, as dinner speaker, as mentor and confidant, and as an extraordinary hero to all who meet her. In 2006—after her involvement with the Network for a number of years—she took on the role of Presidential Sponsor. Her down-to-earth, yet profound messages at each Network gathering are remarkable and her leadership is a gift to all!
