2008 Network Leadership Award Recipient—Circles of Power:  A Leadership Program for Women Faculty

Network Executive Board Chair Madlyn Hanes presents the 2008 Network Leadership Award to the COPS Director and Associate Professor of Neuroscience Diane M. Snow

From its inception in 1998 until 2002, the “Circles of Power” (COPS) program was offered to faculty of the University of Kentucky medical campus (UK). However, with obvious success and rapidly increasing interest, it quickly expanded to a campus-wide endeavor and became sponsored by the UK President’s Commission on Women. By spring of 2008, COPS will be able to boast nine graduating classes comprising 144 graduates. Thus far, COPS has included participants from 16 colleges and from widely diverse backgrounds. Participation in the program is selective and is limited to 20 highly committed women per year.

The COPS program is an innovative program dedicated to enhancing the leadership skills of women who have leadership interests and capabilities. COPS is unique in its strong reflective and process-oriented curriculum, which allows women to clarify their personal and professional goals, and build on personal styles of leadership. The mission of COPS is to provide faculty with intrapersonal and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in a leadership role within their specific academic or clinical specialties; and to provide women faculty with an expanding network of role models and peer mentors.
