Severely Injured Military Veterans: Personal Stories
Ashley McGonagle

Ashley McGonagle, from Toledo, Ohio, is one of the family members in
the program. Her husband, Brian, was severely injured in Iraq. While
accompanying her husband in his recovery at Brooke Army Medical Center
in San Antonio, she worked with ACE project adviser Jeff Stevens to
identify opportunities to continue the coursework she had started while
enrolled at the University of Toledo.
Currently taking classes at the University of Incarnate Word, she hopes
to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree prior to Brian’s release from
the hospital.
Corey Smith

Corey Smith, a Marine, joined the ACE program after he lost part of
his left leg and suffered extensive additional wounds during combat in
Iraq. He met Heather Bernard, an academic adviser in the ACE project,
while recovering at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Together they developed a
plan for the young Marine to go back to college.
Today, with support from the Veteran's Upward Bound office at
Cuyahoga Community College and the Kent
State University department of student affairs, Smith is studying
criminal justice and counterterrorism at Kent State University.
