Information for Test-Takers

Below is a list of commonly asked questions about the new 2012 test series. An expanded list of Frequently Asked Questions for current and prospective test-takers is also available.

WHO needs to know

  • Anyone who is considering taking or preparing for the GED Tests
  • Anyone currently taking the tests
  • Anyone who has taken the tests, but has not earned minimum scores on each content area test and the minimum total score

WHAT you need to know

GED Testing ServiceTM will be releasing a new GED test series.

WHEN this is happening

The new test series—the fifth in test history—will start on January 1, 2012. (The Spanish- and French-language editions are anticipated to be released on January 1, 2013.)

WHY the new test

The GED Tests are designed to measure the core academic knowledge and skills (reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies) of graduating high school seniors. The tests are updated periodically to ensure that they reflect the knowledge and skills currently expected of high school graduates.

PRICE: Will testing fees change?

There may or may not be an increase in fees. Fees, if any, are set by states and jurisdictions. Contact your state or jurisdiction to find out more about any testing fees.

SCORES: Can scores from the current, 2002, tests be combined with the new tests?

No. By December 31, 2011, you must have taken and earned minimum scores on all five current content area tests (Language Arts, Reading; Language Arts, Writing; Social Studies; Science; and Mathematics) and the minimum average score, or you will need to take the entire 2012 Series test battery—all five tests.

CHANGES: What will be different about the new GED Tests in 2012?

The tests will continue to test academic achievement in Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, but will reflect an emphasis on informational texts, higher-order thinking skills, and more constructed response questions.
