Award Description

Purpose

The COF Mentor Award recognizes ACE member presidents’ and chancellors’ contributions to enhancing the diversity and capacity of future leaders of American higher education.

Selection Process

Nominations are solicited annually by the Council of Fellows from all former Fellows. The Chair of the Council of Fellows convenes the officers of the Executive Board to make the selection. The award includes a letter of recognition from the Council of Fellows and a plaque or other appropriate memento.

Criteria

To be eligible for consideration, a nominee must be a president or chancellor (or a recently retired president or chancellor) of an ACE member institution. In addition, the nominee must have been a mentor to four or more ACE Fellows. Selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Commitment to leadership development, with evidence that the nominee has aided in enhancing the diversity and capacity of American higher education

  • Intentional mentoring

  • Articulation of strategies and values that underlay decisions

  • Evidence of transformational leadership

  • Continuing relationships with the Fellows

Nominations and letters of support must address the stated criteria listed above.

Nominating letters must be submitted by a former Fellow. At least one of the letters of support for a nominee must come from a Fellow mentored by the nominee.

Frequency

The award is presented annually at the Opening Plenary of the ACE Annual Meeting by the Chair of the Council of Fellows.

Submission

All candidate applications should be e-mailed to fellows@ace.nche.edu by November 7, 2009.
