From Open Courseware to hybrid classes and podcasts, distance
learners are accessing higher education in greater numbers and through
multiple channels. First Stop highlights promising practices in
distance learning and online education that meet the changing needs of
lifelong learners.
What's Working and Where
Name: Transparency by Design Initiative
Location: Nationwide
Description: An initiative to assist adult learners
in becoming educated consumers of distance education.
Structures for Success:
- Members comprise a consortium of regionally-accredited,
adult-serving, distance education institutions.
- In August 2009, a website, College
Choices for Adults, was launched to inform adult learners of program
learning outcomes, measurements, and results at member institutions to
assist their selection process.
- All institutional members have pledged to uphold the Principles of Good Practice for Higher Education
Institutions Serving Adults at a Distance to ensure the quality and
accessibility of higher education distance learning programs.
- Standards of data reporting are jointly developed by member
institutions.
