Lifelong Learning Initiatives: Complete List

FedExperience: More than half a million federal employees will leave government in the next five years. To help the federal government address critical talent shortages, The Partnership for Public Service launched this initiative to recruit and hire experienced older workers.

Joliet Junior College's Mature Workforce Center: Through the Plus 50 Initiative, Joliet Junior College received a grant to implement and promote workshops and services geared specifically to older adults who are retooling for new careers.

Jump Start the Conversation: The Aging in Place Intiative awarded grants to organizations in San Diego that help to create more lifelong learning opportunities for older adults.

Oasis Institute—"The Immigrant Experience:" This initiative shares the stories of immigrant older adults, with emphasis on their cultural insights and work experiences. Five core courses are offered at OASIS Centers including immigration history, literature, film, food, and culture and tutoring.

Project SHINE: Coordinated through Temple University's Center for Intergenerational Learning, Project SHINE pairs university students with older immigrants and refugees to help them acquire U.S. citizenship and fosters positive cross-cultural and intergenerational relationships.

Wisconsin Rural Women's Initiative: This initiative serves women over the age of 50, offering educational and self-improvement opportunities during weekend training sessions. Wisconsin's County Health Department partners with the Women's Initiative to take the program into communities and provides other services as well.

The Center for Aging and Community at the University of Indianapolis has completed the last phase of a research project titled, "Gray Matters: Opportunities and Challenges for Indiana's Aging Workforce."

The MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Community College Encore Career Grants provide funding to community colleges that create new ways for adults over the age of 50 to transition to "encore careers" in education, healthcare, and social services.

Pennsylvania State University recently received a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation to identify the lifelong learning needs of older adults in rural Pennsylvania.

SeniorNet Online explains how information is collected and organized on the World Wide Web and offers tips on Internet research strategies through free, self-paced tutorials.

The AT&T Foundation has awarded a $1 million AT&T AccessAll grant to The OASIS Institute. This grant will expand OASIS's Excellence Technology Partnership to more communities. The project helps mature adults develop the skills, resources, and confidence to use technology effectively in their personal lives and in the workforce.

The San Diego Community College Centers for Education and Technology's Older Adult and Parent Education Departments are offering two intergenerational projects:

  • PROJECT READY—a literacy program designed to improve school-readiness of young children.
  • PROJECT CHILD—(Child Health and Intergenerational Linkage Development) gives young children and their parents opportunities to interact with older adults in a variety of activities.

The Vital Aging Network, sponsored by the University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education, provides resources that link people aged 55 and older to opportunities for meaningful and productive experiences. It also provides a forum in which people can collaborate to promote self-sufficiency, community participation, and improved quality of life for older adults.
