The ACE Institute for New Chief
Academic Officers (CAOs), designed for CAOs in their first three years
on the job, provides practical executive leadership development. Begun
in 2004, the Institute is a yearlong program with three gatherings
throughout the academic year.
Each session is highly participatory, using a combination of
discussions facilitated by experienced CAOs and presidents, case studies
presented by program participants, conversations with peers from similar
and diverse institutions, and briefings by national experts. Our goals
are to identify topics and issues of immediate concern to new academic
vice presidents and provide the means to address them. Recruiting begins
in the winter and continues into the spring.
Invest in your institution through this investment in
leadership.
The Institute provides new CAOs the Following:
- Lessons and insights about the leadership challenges faced by
CAOs.
- Different (and competing) perspectives from peers with different
experiences.
- A low-risk setting to test ideas.
- An understanding of how common issues and challenges play out in
different types of institutions.
- An extended professional network of fellow CAOs from a cross-section
of institutions.
Who Participates:
ACE selects up to 35 new Chief Academic Officers to participate. We
also will invite four or five experienced CAOs and presidents to
participate in each of the three meetings to facilitate conversations
and serve as resources.
What to Expect:
All sessions are highly participatory and use a combination of the
following:
- Mini-cases written and presented by participating CAOs.
- Facilitated discussions with seasoned CAOs.
- Cross-sector and intra-sector conversations.
- Short briefings on key issues with national leaders
Meeting Participants have said:
- "I have found it THE single best program of this kind I have ever
been in. It consists of three sessions (2–4 days each) with about
35 other newly appointed provosts. The peer learning is absolutely
fantastic, and the general presentations by experienced academic leaders
are quite useful as well."
- "I gained much more than I expected. It provided me different
perspectives to look at my job, which I feel is very important to know
to survive in this high pressured job."
- "This was exactly what I needed at this time. I've got some very
good 'big picture' concerns to ponder and some wonderful suggestions for
tackling the challenges of the everyday."
Scholarship Opportunities
Thanks to the generous support of the TIAA-CREF
Institute, some partial scholarships are available to those who
