Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
addressed higher education leaders from around the country yesterday at
the American Council on Education's 91st Annual Meeting, which concludes
today in Washington, DC.

President Honored for His Dedication and Commitment to Diversity in
Higher Education
The American Council on Education today presented Freeman A.
Hrabowski, III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore
County with the 2009 Reginald A. Wilson Diversity Leadership Award for
his extraordinary contributions to the higher education enterprise.

BUZZ: Ohio State President Calls on Higher Education to Meet Economic
Crisis Head-On
Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee last night told leaders
gathered at the American Council on Education’s Annual Meeting
that rather than merely waiting for the current economic crisis to pass,
institutions should use it to transform higher education for the new
century.

Releases First National Census of Chief Academic Officers
As higher education faces a generational sea change as presidents age
and consider retirement, the American Council on Education releases the
results of the first and only comprehensive census of chief academic
officers, campus administrators who are important leaders themselves and
are perhaps best positioned to take up chief executive positions at
academic institutions.

of South Florida President Judy Genshaft Elected ACE Board Chair
She will serve a one-year term and succeeds Andrew K. Benton,
president of Pepperdine University (CA). ACE's membership also elected
John Sexton, president of New York University, vice chair and Ronald
Crutcher, president of Wheaton College (MA), secretary.

Recognizes Kristopher Miller, Adult Learner of the Year
Kristopher Miller overcame the difficulty of balancing work, family
responsibilities, and schoolwork in order to pursue his dream of
receiving his bachelor's degree and, in turn, securing a brighter future
for his family.

Hemenway Receives 2009 ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments
Mentor's Award
Robert E. Hemenway, chancellor of the University of Kansas, was
presented with the 2009 Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor's
Award* during the 91st Annual Meeting of the American Council on
Education, held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

Council on Education Presents 2009 Donna Shavlik Award to Peggy R.
Williams
The American Council on Education's Office of Women in Higher
Education (OWHE) today honored Peggy R. Williams, president emerita of
Ithaca College (NY), by presenting her with the 2009 Donna Shavlik Award
in recognition of her lifelong commitment to advancing women's issues in
higher education.
