Chairing the Academic Department

Who Should Attend

Department, division, and program chairs should attend, as well as deans interested in developing the leadership skills of their department chairs. Team participation is encouraged, and a reduced rate is available for additional registrants who attend from a single institution.

Program Goals, Format, and Materials

The program aims to develop the leadership capacities of newly appointed department, division, and program heads and renew the skills and enthusiasm of experienced heads. The workshop format emphasizes exploration, experimentation, and networking through its introductory evening exercises, formal sessions, breakfast conversations, and lunchtime topic tables. These lunchtime topics are often suggested by the participants. Two unprogrammed evenings allow time for participants and teams to network informally.

The workshop begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday with an unhosted social hour, and concludes at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
