2006 ACE Annual Report

Letter from the Board Chair

Cantor,

 Chairperson of ACE

On behalf of the American Council on Education Board of Directors, I am pleased to present this report on ACE's 2006 agenda and initiatives. Here you will find numerous examples of how ACE effectively partners with its members, foundations, and others to achieve tangible results focused on four themes that are crucial for leaders in American higher education today: access, success, equity, and diversity; institutional effectiveness; lifelong learning; and internationalization.

I would draw your attention, in particular, to Solutions for Our Future—the multiyear campaign that ACE kicked off in 2006 to better inform the American public about the pivotal role that higher education institutions are playing in the global knowledge economy. As America's higher education leaders, we know that our institutions add considerable and quantifiable strength to our local and regional economies, as well as contribute demonstrably to a high quality of life in our communities and, in aggregate, to the nation. However, the public still finds reason to question our motives, as we are subject to all-too-frequent popular portrayals as being hard to access, expensive, or unresponsive.

The Solutions campaign counters those portrayals and helps us convey the important message that while we are a key conduit for individuals seeking to achieve their private dreams, we also are a public good, leveraging our intellectual capital on behalf of our communities and the nation, to find sustainable solutions to the most pressing and seemingly intractable problems facing our nation and workforce. The campaign should inspire us to embrace this public role more fully—to come down from our collective hilltops, work with the public and with business and community leaders, and engage society using methods and language that are easily understood.

I thank the nearly 1,000 colleges and universities that have heeded this call and signed up to participate actively in this campaign. If you have not yet joined us, please do so by visiting the Solutions web site (www.solutionsforourfuture.org). To learn more about other important ACE initiatives, please read the Year in Review section.

Thank you for your time and commitment to ACE. We would not have accomplishments to highlight without the support of our members and other organizations.
