CIP Parental Involvement
Partner Institution: Northern Kentucky University
Activity: College Preparatory Program for Families
The College Preparatory
Program, a partnership between Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and
Bracken County Middle School, focused on a series of evening workshops
to help prepare Talent Search students and their parents for what they
must do to ensure the students' successful entrance to postsecondary
education. Emphasis was placed on technology and computer
assistance.
The two-hour workshops, led
by NKU’s Talent Search project staff with the help of a computer
instructor and two guest speakers, were offered over eight weeks at
Bracken County Middle School's library and computer lab. Six families
participated.
Before the first
workshop, participants took a pre-test about how to prepare for college.
The test results shaped decisions about which specific topics to
emphasize, and were compared with the results of a post-test to measure
the program's success.
Topics covered in the
workshops included:
- What You Can Be Doing Now to Help Your
Child Prepare for College
- Family Internet Use and Responsibility
(computer assisted)
- How School Is Different Today Than When
You Were in School; Learning Styles
- Using Computers to Help with Studies
and Homework (computer assisted)
- Careers
- Using the Computer to Search for
Career, College, and Scholarship Information (computer
assisted)
- Saving for College
- Planning College Visits; Looking at
Viewbooks and Catalogs; Graduation
The successful conclusion
of this program was possible through the partnership established between
Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and Bracken County Middle School. NKU
agreed to match the $5,000 provided by the American Council on
Education’s College Is Possible program. These funds were used to
purchase computers and printers. Bracken County Middle School provided
the use of the computer lab and library.
