Mercy College
I. Institutional overview
Mercy
College is a fully accredited private comprehensive college
offering undergraduate and graduate degrees (Carnegie Bal/SGC,
Postbac-A&S/Ed, MU, MFT4/S/LTI, M4/NR, Mater’s L).
Founded in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy, the College became independent
in 1969. Today, Mercy has five campuses throughout the greater New
York metropolitan area as well as a thriving online campus: the main
campus is located in Dobbs Ferry with branch campuses located in the
Bronx, Manhattan, White Plains and Yorktown.
Mercy College is dedicated to offering a curriculum of liberal arts
and sciences as well as pre-professional and professional programs in
order to equip men and women with the knowledge and resources that will
enable them to become productive citizens of the community.
Graduate programs provide advanced preparation in selected
disciplines.
Mercy College offers a quality education within five schools:
Business, Education, Health and Natural Sciences, Liberal Arts, and
Social and Behavioral Sciences. There are over 90 undergraduate
and graduate programs, 25 of which are available through Mercy Online. A
diverse faculty of approximately 180 full-time and over 600 part-time
faculty instructs over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
The faculty is committed to the scholarship of teaching and more than 70
percent of those who are full-time have appropriate terminal
degrees. Among the faculty are Fulbright Scholars, published
authors and national authorities in their fields.
Mercy College serves students with varied obligations and
backgrounds. Strong financial aid programs and flexible scheduling
in day, evening, and weekend sessions and Mercy Online create
exceptional access and make it possible for students to earn degrees in
formats that fit their lives. Our internationalization efforts
will involve customizing learning opportunities that serve our diverse
audiences.
II. Current internationalization efforts and goals
Mercy College has general education requirements for
language and cultural studies as well as historical and global
perspectives, and has historically placed students into study abroad
programs managed by other institutions. Approximately 150 of our
9,000 students presently hold international residency status. We
also benefit from close proximity to New York City, which connects us on
a daily basis to global organizations and issues.
Mercy College has a campus committee focused on international
awareness, and two new staff in admissions and academic affairs have
been assigned responsibility for advancing our internationalization
efforts. Presently, we are discussing a two-week summer travel
course to Israel for our business and homeland security students.
Additionally, we have a long-term involvement with the Model United
Nations (UN) Conference, spanning 23 years and resolution topics such as
climate change, human trafficking, and AIDS. In April 2009, our
team will represent the African state of Namibia and is led by Professor
Rick Shiels. Mercy College is now an NGO associated with the
Department of Public Information of the UN.
We are interested in participating in this Collaborative to develop a
more comprehensive and robust plan for internationalization at our
college, gleaning best practices from other institutions and launching
our own pilot programs in coming years.
Our new, draft strategic plan (February 2009) specifically includes a
goal of promoting global citizenship, consistent with our objective to
be a leader in transformational education. Drawing from the
experiences of other Collaborative members, we anticipate allocating
modest new resources to further infuse our curriculum with international
content, establish relevant co-curricular opportunities, secure our own
study abroad partnerships, lead international travel trips and
short-term residencies, develop recruitment plans for international
students, and use technology to establish and maintain global social
networks.
Dr. Kimberly Cline, President of Mercy College, has been personally
involved in outreach to nearly 50 international institutions as
potential partners within the past year, and we have begun dialogues
with a dozen of these. Dr. Michael Sperling, Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs, has a career commitment to
internationalization, including recent service on the ACE
Internationalization Collaborative Advisory Board and panel
representation at the recent Association of International Education
Administrators (AIEA) Annual Conference. Prior to his position at
Mercy College, Dr. Sperling served as Vice Provost for Global Learning
at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
