ACE Roundtable Discussion Addresses Internationalization and Multicultural Education

August 7, 2006

A recent roundtable discussion hosted by the American Council on Education (ACE) convened 14 leading scholars, practitioners and institutional leaders from across the United States to explore the relationship between internationalization and multicultural education.

Carranza, professor of sociology and ethnic studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Michael L. Berger, vice president for academic affairs and provost, Arcadia University (PA).

The July 26-27 roundtable, Educating for Difference: The Intersection between Internationalization and Multicultural Education, was hosted by ACE’s Center for International Initiatives (CII) and Center for Advancement of Racial and Ethnic Equity (CAREE) and funded by the Ford Foundation.

Participants discussed issues such as how the collaboration between internationalization and multicultural education would best serve students; the rationale for promoting collaboration between international and multicultural educators; and possible campus activities, policies and initiatives to support greater collaboration between international and multicultural educators.

A report on the conclusions from the roundtable will be produced and distributed in early 2007 to all ACE member presidents and chancellors. The publication will propose a framework through which to view the intersection between internationalization and multicultural education and suggest strategies for implementing collaborative policies and initiatives.
