Activity: Pre-College Outreach Student Government Associations
The University of Texas at
El Paso (UTEP) began its Student Government Association
(SGA) in 1997. Since then, the SGA has grown into a viable entity
with formal committees and a board of directors. Annually, the UTEP
Upward Bound SGA determines annual service projects, fundraisers,
and the manner in which they will celebrate their post-Upward Bound
commencement exercises.
Annually, the SGA awards two
scholarships to a male and female graduating Upward Bound student. SGA
members determine eligibility criteria, application processes and
appoint a non-student, non-supervising staff scholarship committee.
Recently, the UTEP Upward Bound SGA formalized its bylaws. These bylaws
will be added to this message in the near future. The bylaws are
comprehensive in nature and can assist other schools
and pre-collegiate programs in developing this worthwhile student
enrichment opportunity.
Although the SGA has some
autonomy in the activities they implement, all activities must be
sanctioned by the program director and deemed appropriate to address the
areas of leadership, service, and personal development while
contributing to the overall mission of the Upward Bound
program.
The SGA has proven to be an
excellent retention tool for the UTEP Upward Bound program, supporting
the notion that when students are actively engaged in processes and have
the opportunity to make decisions that impact their personal futures,
they will stick around to see the outcome. Among the 2004 Upward
Bound graduates, 12 of an original cohort of 16,
75%, remained in the program for four
years.
