International Engagement
Transatlantic Dialogue
Since 1989, ACE has engaged in a series of biannual meetings with the
European University
Association (EUA, formerly CRE: The Association of European
Universities). These invitational meetings conducted every other year
provide an opportunity for approximately 30 presidents, rectors, and
vice chancellors from the United States, Canada, and Europe to engage in
an in-depth conversation on contemporary higher education issues.
The first ACE/CRE meeting was held at the University of Hartford,
Connecticut. Meeting venues alternate between North America and Europe.
The 2005 Transatlantic Dialogue, held in September, focused on the
changing social compact between the state and higher education. The 2003
meeting, cosponsored by ACE, CRE, and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada,
took place July at the Salzburg Seminar. The occasional paper Higher
Education in a Pluralist World: A Transatlantic View is based on
the meeting conversations. The 2001 meeting hosted by the
Université Laval in Québec focused on the rapidly changing
global landscape of higher education. The occasional paper The Brave
New (and Smaller) World of Higher Education: A Transatlantic View
builds upon the conversation of that meeting.
Transatlantic Dialogue 2008
The theme of the meeting, Brave
New World Revisited: Competition and Cooperation in Higher
Education, reflected on the 2001 Transatlantic Dialogue meeting that
examined a future shaped by technology, globalization and competition.
Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia hosted
this year's gathering which took place June 20–23.
