Jim Selbe, director of Program Evaluations for the American Council
on Education (ACE), is one of two recipients of the 2008
President’s Award from the Council of College and Military
Educators (CCME) for his work to develop an innovative program aimed at
helping severely injured veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan pursue their
dreams of a college education.
Selbe, along with co-awardee Jim Wright, president of Dartmouth
College, was recognized Feb. 21 at CCME’s
2008 conference in San Francisco for his work on the Severely
Injured Military Veterans: Fulfilling Their Dreams program.
Formally launched in April 2007, the program offers academic advising
to injured veterans and their families to assist them in identifying
educational resources and programs that will help them achieve their
goals, suggesting strategies to help them be successful students, and
avoiding possible pitfalls, such as diploma and accreditation mills. To
date, nearly 250 injured veterans have participated in the program.
In accepting the award, Selbe acknowledged the commitment and
dedication of program’s team members working in the hospitals:
Heather Bernard at Walter Reed and Bethesda, Jeff Stevens at Brooke Army
Hospital, and Teleia Tollison at Balboa hospital in San Diego.
“Every day, their passion and hard work with service members
and family members propels the project,” said Selbe.
CCME's membership is composed of military educators, civilian
educators, and post secondary educational institutions. The group's
mission is to promote and provide educational programs and services
to facilitate communication between the membership and the Department of
Defense educational support network.
The CCME President's Award is presented to an individual or
organization that has made a significant contribution to advance the
cause of military education.
