The Council of
Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor's Award is presented annually to
acknowledge the enormous role of mentors in the success of ACE Fellows
Program participants.
Established in
1965, the ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and
leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing
faculty and staff members for senior positions in college and university
administration.
“Mentors
are key to the leadership development of participants in the ACE Fellows
Program. The program is indebted to the hundreds of presidents and
senior officers of colleges and universities who, in any year, serve as
mentors and nominators for Fellows, and to those like Robert Glidden who
serve as mentors and nominators for a steady stream of Fellows over
multiple years,” said Sharon A. McDade, director, ACE Fellows
Program.
Fidelity
Investments has pledged $30,000 to support the Mentor's Award and the
Fellows program over the next three years. Annual contributions of
$10,000 will enable the Council of Fellows to provide support for the
discretionary fund of the Mentor's Award winner's institution, as well
as the Fellows Fund for the Future, which provides stipends to those
institutions which are unable to afford the cost of sponsoring a
Fellow.
“This
award recognizes the importance of mentoring in the shaping of future
leaders in colleges and universities across the country,” said
John Begley, executive vice president, Fidelity Investments.
“Fidelity is privileged to support a program that, in recognizing
one person, ultimately could inspire so many more—students,
educators, administrators, and the community alike.”
Glidden, who
serves as a leadership focus group facilitator for the current class of
ACE Fellows, was recognized for his service as a role model for seven
ACE Fellows and his concern for the development of future leadership in
higher education.
Glidden was the
19th president of Ohio University (1994-2004). Previously, he served at
Florida State University as professor and dean of the School of Music
and as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Glidden has also
served on the faculties of Wright State University (OH), Indiana
University, and the University of Oklahoma, and was dean of music at
Bowling Green State University (OH). He also served for three years as
the executive director of the National Association of Schools of Music
and the National Association of Schools of Art in Washington,
DC.
A native of
Iowa, Glidden received his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D., all in
music, from the University of Iowa.
