More than 1,600 college and university leaders gathered this
weekend in Washington, DC for the American Council on Education's 89th
Annual Meeting. This year's meeting focuses on
"The Access Imperative," one of the nation's most pressing
challenges. Speakers include Peggy Conlon, president and
CEO of the Ad Council; Freeman Hrabowski, III, president of the
University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Ron Suskind, Pulitzer
Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author; Sara Martinez Tucker,
U.S. under secretary of education; and Marian Wright Edelman, founder
and president of the Children’s Defense Fund.

Releases Report Documenting Continuing Challenges for Women, Minority
College Leaders
As Harvard announced yesterday the appointment of Drew Gilpin
Faust as the university’s first female president, ACE
released a new study that found America’s college presidents are
older and holding the job longer than at any time during the past 20
years, making the outlook for the next generation of
leaders—particularly women and minorities—uncertain. [read

UMBC President Discusses Expanding College Access at
Opening Session of ACE's Annual Meeting
While substantial progress was made in increasing college access
during the last century, the remaining challenges are “in many
ways as great, if not greater, particularly for poor people of all
races,” said Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, president of University of
Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), speaking at the opening plenary of

Board Chair
Ricardo R. Fernández, president of Lehman College, The City
University of New York, has been named the new Board chair of the
American Council on Education. Fernández assumed his role at
ACE’s 89th Annual Meeting, which concluded today in Washington,
DC. Fernández, who will serve a one-year term, succeeds Nancy
Cantor, chancellor and president of Syracuse University as Board

Ethnic Equity (CAREE) at ACE today presented four distinguished leaders
