ACE's Adult Learner of the Year Award
ACE Recognizes Kristopher Miller, Adult Learner of the Year

Washington, DC (Feb. 9, 2009)—Kristopher Miller overcame
the difficulty of balancing work, family responsibilities, and
schoolwork in order to pursue his dream of receiving his bachelor's
degree and, in turn, securing a brighter future for his family. The
American Council on Education (ACE) today named Miller the 2008 Adult
Learner of the Year in recognition of his educational achievement.
The Adult Learner of the Year Award is presented annually by ACE's
College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT) to an adult learner who
used ACE credit recommendations to earn a college degree or advance a
career. Recipients must also demonstrate outstanding achievements in
their community or workplace while successfully balancing the demands of
family, career and education. Nationwide, ACE's CREDIT program evaluates
employers' formal learning and recommends that institutions award credit
when that learning is college level and appropriate to the student's
field of study. "Every year, thousands of students like Kristopher make
the decision, at great sacrifice, to pursue a college degree, to improve
their careers, their lives, and the lives of their families. ACE is
proud to help them earn credit for high-level learning acquired outside
the classroom," said Susan Porter Robinson, ACE vice president for
lifelong learning.
Miller enrolled in Lipscomb University (TN), bringing with him 14
credits earned through work-related training courses recommended for
college credit by ACE's CREDIT Service. He pursued an accounting degree
and was honored with an Outstanding Achievement in Accounting award
during his senior year. Miller graduated from Lipscomb in 2007. "Four
years ago, I came to the realization that in order to better support my
family, I needed to go back to school. One of the main reasons I was
able to achieve this goal was through the love and support of my wife
and son. I graduated at the top of my college's adult learning program
and now work for a leading CPA firm in Nashville with a very bright
future," said Miller, a resident of Nashville, TN.
Nominations were reviewed by a three-member panel: Preston D. Morgan,
senior director for Workforce Development for the Illinois Community
College Board; Diana Thomas, vice president of United States training
for McDonald's Corporation; and Deborah Ross Warin, Director of ACE's
College Credit Recommendation Service.
ACE's College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT) pioneered the
evaluation of education and training attained outside the college and
university degree programs. For more than 30 years, CREDIT has evaluated
and made college credit recommendations for nearly 36,000 courses
offered by hundreds of organizations. CREDIT uses college and
university faculty to evaluate courses offered by business and industry,
labor unions, associations, and government agencies and recommends
college credit as appropriate. More than half a million adult learners
are current enrolled in ACE Transcript Services, with hundreds of
thousands of additional learners using these credit recommendations
directly through partnerships between their organizations and colleges
and universities.
Founded in 1918, ACE (www.acenet.edu) is the major coordinating body
for all the nation's higher education institutions, representing more
than 1,600 college and university presidents, and more than 200 related
associations, nationwide. It seeks to provide leadership and a unifying
voice on key higher education issues and influence public policy through
advocacy, research and program initiatives.
