
Accelerating Internationalization Through Campus-wide Collaboration
More than 125 attendees participated in the 2009 annual meeting of the Internationalization Collaborative, held on January 30–31, 2009, in Washington D.C. Fifty-two institutions of all types were represented at the meeting. The meeting focused on how diverse campus constituents can collaborate more effectively through sharing one another's expertise, resources, and systems to advance comprehensive internationalization. The sessions highlighted exemplary partnerships between international offices and finance, information technology, student affairs, and development offices. Highlights from the 2009 MeetingWorkshop A: An Integrated Approach for Advancing Comprehensive Internationalization This workshop presented ACE's integrative approach for internationalization; this strategy integrates attention to inputs (through an internationalization review and strategic planning process) with attention to outputs (through the articulation of learning outcomes and the development of an assessment plan). Workshop B: International Partnerships: Guidelines for Colleges and Universities This workshop engaged participants in developing a more strategic approach to their campus partnership work. It drew upon ACE's recently updated publication, International Partnerships: Guidelines for Colleges and Universities and assisted participants in developing a comprehensive framework for their institutional partnerships. Workshop C: At Home in the World: Educating for Global Connections and Local Commitments This workshop assisted participants in developing a conceptual framework and a set of learning outcomes to guide their institution's efforts to promote synergy between internationalization and multicultural education. Opening Keynote Panel: A Leadership View on Accelerating Campus Internationalization
The opening session featured three leaders of institutions that have a demonstrated commitment to internationalization. The panel focused on why they have made internationalization a leadership priority, how they translated conviction into action, and how they fostered the collaboration required to advance internationalization. The wide ranging discussion touched on how to make internationalization a priority in a tough economic climate and offered suggestions on how to maintain and sustain an international ethos on campus. Plenary #1: Collaborating with Finance and Administration This panel showcased good practice and innovative ideas in collaboration between international offices and finance, information technology, and administrative offices to enhance internationalization. Panelists:
Plenary #2: Collaborating with Student Affairs and Residence Life
Student affairs units offer programs and services that are integral aspects of internationalizing the campus. Learning is enhanced when students participate in international student clubs, intercultural campus events, and global dimensions of residence life. This panel showcased good practice in collaborating with student affairs. Panelists:
Plenary #3: Collaborating with External Affairs External affairs offices—including advancement, institutional foundations, alumni, and government relations—represent the institution to a wide variety of constituents. As such, these offices can be key partners in furthering the internationalization efforts of an institution. This panel showcased good practice and innovative ideas in collaboration among international officers, faculty, and external affairs officers to enhance internationalization. Panelists:
Closing Plenary: Mining the Internationalization Mother Lode
Michael Berger, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Arcadia University. [Presentation, ppt: 272 KB] Dr. Berger's engaging speech presented thoughts and lessons learned about internationalization from his 16 years as Provost of Arcadia University. He touched on the importance of drawing on existing areas of support for internationalization and connecting various initiatives through strategic planning and establishing synergistic relationships.
